Yemen: A country in crisis
War, famine and now Covid-19 has left Yemen fighting for its very existence. The UN predicts by 2021 that Yemen could be wiped out. With a population of 24 million, some 80%,12 million of whom are children, are in desperate need of clean water, food and sanitation.
Mo Abbas and Hamdi Ahmed have decided to dedicate 90 days to travel the distance from UK to Yemen (6000 km) via cycling, running and walking to raise as much money as possible for this cause. Each £50 raised will be enough to provide a food package to feed a family.
Mo has become a father for the first time this year and seeing children suffer has really hit home. Hamdi has family in Yemen in desperate need of your help.
Please follow their journey via their social media and donate generously to this noble cause.

Half the population live on less than £1.50 a day!
Global Hunger Index indicates an alarming rate of food insecurity in Yemen.
Yemen is facing catastrophe beyond anything that we can imagine. The on-going war has killed thousands of innocent civilians and famine has caused an alarming rate of food security, especially among children.
Nearly half of the population live on less than two dollars a day and social development indicators, such as child malnutrition, maternal mortality and educational attainment, remain extremely poor.
Yemen is also the most food insecure country in the Arab world and is amongst the top 10 least food secure countries globally. The 2014 Global Hunger Index ranks Yemen 73 out of 81 countries analysed, indicating an “alarming” stage of food insecurity. Nevertheless, the 2014 Global Hunger Index was based on data extracted from previous years and does not take into consideration the impact of the 2015 Coalition war under the leadership of Saudi Arabia.
The on-going conflict has negatively impacted access to food for millions of vulnerable people. Supply of essential food commodities has been limited, leading to a rise in the prices of basic commodities. This is further complicated by a decline in purchasing power linked to the devaluation of the Yemeni Riyal. Inadequate nutrition coupled with limited access to clean water and sanitation and healthcare services can lead to increased morbidity, especially of children. The continuous rise in the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) is only exacerbating an already very severe situation.
The food packs for a family of 5 can last between 2-4 weeks.
The food packs consist of (but are subject to change):
Rice
Tea
Sugar
Milk
Tomato
Tuna
Margarine
Pasta
