Imagine a child starting their day without a meal, struggling to focus in an overcrowded classroom. In Zanzibar, this is the reality for many orphans. Malnutrition and limited access to quality education is hindering many orphans from realising their full potential. This cycle leads to unemployment and persistent hardship in families where poverty spans generations.

Help us meet our annual food budget and support school tuition fees for our 170 orphaned and disadvantaged students. 

63% of the children of widows in Zanzibar are likely live in homes with food deprivation,* resulting in malnutrition, hunger, and sicknesses which often go untreated. The, result of this is missed school and low academic achievement. We take these students out of over-crowded government schools, and provide a very special education experience, so they can grow to be employable and give back in their turn.

In response to high rates of malnutrition and absenteeism among our orphaned and disadvantaged student population, we launched an intensive food program nine years ago. 

Today, we provide meals, medical care, and quality education to 170 students daily, helping some of Zanzibar's most vulnerable children break free from poverty and lead productive lives.  

Our students, living with their mothers, grandmothers, or aunties, face daily challenges.To ease the burden on these families, we offer full meals at school, allowing children to focus on their education. Each school day begins with a nutritious breakfast of porridge and dates, followed by a hearty morning snack like pancakes or a two-egg omelette. Lunch includes a hot meal, fruit, and a snack to take home.

At The Creative Education Foundation Zanzibar (CEFZ), we make sure each child receives enough food during the school day to sustain them until the next day.

We have found every child can thrive in various ways with  proper nutritiont love, education, and spiritual guidance. 

Since implementing our student nutrition program, our children are healthier, happier, and more attentive, with malnutrition no longer an issue. They now have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Your donation not only provides food for these vulnerable children but also covers their tuition fees, ensuring access to quality education, small classes, trained teachers, and necessary supplies.

From sitting on dirty classroom floors, in classes of 100+, the children of widows joining CEFZ receive a transformative education, studying such subjects as knitting, carpentry, house building and farming, with all the usual academic classes, and sports like swimming. They build their confidence and creativity and critical thinking skills. Skills which lead to employment.

Students began graduating from our primary and secondary school at O Levels two years ago. To date, we have these graduates in vocational courses to be chefs, plumbers, and electritions. Some have joined the army, a few are employed within tourism. We have students studying diploma programs to be Medical Officers and IT Technicians. The ‘cream of the crop’ each year receive places to continue to their A Levels, and at this time, the first batch of these students are looking to graduate at the end of 2025.

Their futures are now bright, and in every case, they are the first to complete their educations withiin their families, with seemingly endless possibilities for the future.

Children, especially girls, whose mothers were thrown into abject poverty, desperation and despair when their husbands passed, can now look towards an independent and contributing future.
